Bachelor of Arts in Special Education (BASE) Overview
INTRODUCTION
The Hawai‘i Department of Education, in partnership with City University of Seattle, offers a two-year alternative route to teacher certification program, culminating in a Bachelor of Arts in Education degree with certification in Special Education. City University of Seattle in Bellevue, Washington is a fully accredited university by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, and is recognized internationally.
Teacher candidates accepted into the program will complete a comprehensive course of study, inclusive of six quarters of academic classroom instruction, five internships/seminars, and ten weeks of student teaching.

Criteria for Entry
- College Coursework
- Approximately 51 - 60 semester credits (100+ level courses) from an accredited college
- A grade of "C" (2.0) or higher for each course
- Coursework must include:
- College Writing
- College Mathematics (Math for Elementary Teachers, College Algebra or higher)
- Development Psychology
- Humanities
- Social Sciences
- Natural Sciences: Lab required
- No more than 3 outstanding prerequisite courses

- Supervised Work with Children
- Computer Literacy
- Professional Dispositions
TUITION ASSISTANCE
- Available for qualified HIDOE employees
- Minimum of three years teaching in a Hawai`i DOE Special Education classroom required upon program completion
FINANCIAL AID
- Financial aid is available through City University of Seattle.
